Writing about the live-action Beauty and the Beast casting news has certainly been one of my weirdest experiences in blogging so far. It’s been all, “Dan Stevens will play the Beast,” and “Emma Thompson will play a teapot,” and now: “Audra McDonald will play the Wardrobe.”
Yes, that’s right, the lovely Audra McDonald doesn’t look much like a wardrobe, but . . . well, this is Beauty and the Beast, so she was cast as Garderobe (which is the French word for wardrobe). The Wardrobe is hands down one of our favorite characters. If you’ve forgotten, it’s the one in Belle’s room during her stay in the Beast’s castle. She comforts Belle after the Beast was a you-know-what to her.
Audra McDonald is a tony Award-winning actress who also starred in television’s Private Practice.
Bill Condon will direct the live-action Disney retelling.
Production begins in May at Shepperton Studios in London.
So far we have an amazing cast: Emma Watson will play Belle; Dan Stevens will be the Beast/Prince; Luke Evans as the narcissistic villain, Gaston; Josh Gad as Le Fou, Gaston’s loyal sidekick; Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts; and now Audra McDonald as Garderobe.
