If you loved the ‘If I Stay‘ book and movie, and you’re a massive Gayle Forman fan like myself, then keep reading, because we have some amazing news for you!
The ‘If I Stay’ author just had two more of her YA books optioned by Universal. That’s right: Gayle Forman‘s ‘Just One Day‘ and ‘Just One Year‘ are headed to the big screen! What’s even better is that you won’t have to wait for two separate films because Universal plans to combine both into a single love story.
These novels remind me so much of Before Sunrise + Before Sunset (which are two of my favorite movies ever! Before Midnight was pretty good, too, but I didn’t like it as much as its predecessors.)
The Just One Day novel was released August 20, 2013, and is centred around Allyson and Willem, who meet in Europe and spend a magical and romantic 24 hours together.
“Just One Day is book about love, heartbreak, travel, identity, and the “accidents” of fate, Just One Day shows us how sometimes in order to get found, you first have to get lost. . . and how often the people we are seeking are much closer than we know.”
The second book, Just One Year, is the companion to Just One Day, but it’s told from Willem’s POV. When he opens his eyes, all Willem knows is that he must find the girl who he spent one magical day in Paris with. He travels all over the globe in hopes of finding her, and learns a few things about himself and fate along the way.
Just One Year is the romantic, emotional companion to Just One Day. This is a story of the choices we make and the accidents that happen—and the happiness we can find when the two intersect.
If you haven’t read these books yet, I highly recommend you do! Gayle Forman is just such an incredible and emotional writer; it’s no wonder they’re optioning all of her books!
I’m really excited to see what they’ll title the actual movie since they’re combining the books into one film.
Here is some more info on the movie thanks to THR:
Fake Empire heads Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are on board to produce through their Universal-based shingle.
Fake Empire head of motion pictures Lis Rowinski will executive produce alongside Forman. The shingle’s creative exec Lynley Bird brought in the project and will oversee.
Senior vice president of production Kristin Lowe and creative executive Chloe Yellin will oversee for Universal.
Forman may be best known in film circles for her YA novel ‘If I Stay,’ which was adapted by New Line into a drama starring Chlöe Grace Moretz. The novel is currently at No. 1 on the New York Times young adult bestseller list, with its sequel, Where She Went, at No. 3.
Finally, although I’m really happy about this news, and I know I’m just being plain greedy now, but I hope ‘Where She Went,’ which is the followup to ‘If I Stay’ by Gayle Forman, gets a movie deal too. Oddly enough, it plays out quite similarly, with Mia and Adam spending one magical night in New York together after a chance reunion. Like I said, I know I’m being greedy, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed anyway!
