Fans of The Hunger Games will be glad to know that director Francis Lawrence hasn’t completely ruled out more Hunger Games movies; in fact, he admits that “everybody is thinking about expanding the franchise.”
Speaking to MTV, the Hunger Games director said:
“Everybody is thinking about [expanding the franchise], and talking about it. I just think that one has to go into that world carefully. A huge part of what makes the stories great is that it was really built upon this idea of the consequence of war, and you have an amazing character like Katniss at the center of it. To just say, ‘Oh, we’re still in the “Hunger Games” world’ is really risky.”
We have to say, we’d definitely be interested in some back stories or side stories, especially if the scripts were penned by Suzanne Collins herself (similar to what J.K. Rowling is doing with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them). Perhaps she could unleash a novella or two into the world to flesh out a side story.
It’s true, though, that most fans adore this franchise because of the spark that is Katniss and Peeta, and without them the franchise likely wouldn’t rake in as much cash—but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t be successful.
The Twilight Saga has reemerged, and J.K. Rowling is expanding on her Harry Potter universe with Fantastic Beasts, so we don’t see why The Hunger Games couldn’t do the same. I think the problems come when the production companies wait too long to make a decision, leaving fans to move on to some other franchise. Although Twilight is making a comeback with their Facebook-exclusive short stories, we think that the whole project would have gone far more viral if they had done it a lot sooner.
While speaking with MTV, Francis Lawrence also said that he’s “open” to talking about more films, which is a major positive for fans of The Hunger Games.
“You need to make sure that you have something new to say,” Lawrence continued. “New characters need to be created that are just as compelling as Katniss. It’s a tricky thing, but I’m definitely open to talking about it, and I think everybody’s thinking about it. Everybody loves the world, and the ideas.”
We’re definitely all thinking about it. If the pick the right characters then I think this could be a huge success. I think showing the world from the point of view of the Capitol would be quite interesting. Seeing some back story on President Snow would be pretty amazing. Or going back to see Haymitch in the second quarter quell. . . .
The possibilities are endless with this story because there is so much to explore.
As always, we’ll keep you updated if any news on more films emerges! For now, keep those fingers and toes crossed.
